So this line from the final episode of Revolutionary Girl Utena tends to illicit a strong reaction, especially from first-time viewers:

And for good reason! It’s an ice-cold line that undercuts everything Utena’s been asserting over the past 38 episodes. She wants to be a girl and a prince! And then we find out in Episode 34 that the whole reason why Utena has the ring is because she vowed to become Anthy’s prince. To hear Anthy say otherwise is a crushing moment that hurts more than any sword to the back.

However, I want to talk about Anthy’s line that comes right before this: “You remind me so much of Dios when I loved him.”
